Restricted Fire Season (28 November 2007) Announced. You might require a Fire Permit depending on where you live and the current fire danger conditions. The Southern Rural Fire District manages the area under two main zones: Zone A – No Fire Permits required Where the general risk is low the areas in Zone A will be managed with an Open Fire Season. Zone A areas will be upgraded to a Restricted Fire Season status or Prohibited Fire Season status when fire danger values reach certain thresholds. |

Fire Permits are not required to light fires in Zone A areas until a Restricted Fire Season is imposed. However we recommend you follow the “Recommended Best Practice Guidelines for Lighting Fires in the Open” when undertaking any burning activities.
Zone B – Fire Permits required 365 days a year
Because of the higher risk and values threatened Zone B areas will be managed with a Restricted Fire Season 365 days a year. Zone B areas will be upgraded to a Prohibited Fire Season status when fire danger values increase to reach certain thresholds.
Fire Permits are required to light fires 365 days a year. Fire Permits will be cancelled in a Prohibited Fire Season.
Applying for a Fire Permit
When applying for a Fire Permit please allow 10 working days for your application to be processed, site inspection if necessary and a permit completed and sent out.
Fire Permits can be issued for periods from 1 day up to 1 month depending on weather conditions and fire danger. Fire Permits will not be issued in a Prohibited Fire Season.
Fire Permits will be issued in accordance with provisions of section 23 and 24 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977, together with such other conditions as may be deemed necessary.
